3 of the Best Things to Do in Gainesville, FL, with Kids
1. Visit a Museum
Gainesville is full of museums! Some are geared towards older guests, but many are family friendly. One of our favorite things to do in Gainesville, FL, with kids is to visit the Florida Museum of Natural History. This museum is one of the nation’s top five natural history museums, and when you visit, you’ll see why! Kids are always wowed by the exhibits, and admission is free. They also have a Butterfly Rainforest you can go to for a small fee. Imagine the look of wonder on your child’s face as they’re surrounded by these beautiful creatures! It’s the perfect place to learn while having a great time.
2. Explore the Outdoors
There are tons of outdoor areas to explore with the kids! Once you venture outside the city, the scenery changes. With a paradise-like landscape under the Florida sun, it beckons you to come explore. One of our favorite places to spend the day outside is the Gainesville-Hawthorne Trail. This outdoor space is made up of more than 16 miles of paved trail that winds through Paynes Prairie Preserve State Park and other conservation lands. Some trails will lead you to overlooks where you can gaze out over a landscape comprised of prairie, marshes, and water! You’ll love experiencing the views with the whole family.
3. Attend a Festival
There are tons of festivals that come to Gainesville every year! One of the best family-friendly events of the year is the Hoggetowne Medieval Festival. The Alachua County Fairgrounds are transformed to mirror a medieval marketplace complete with feasts, games, and artisans selling their wares. More than 40,000 people of all ages attend this event during its 2 weeks! The entertainment will captivate visitors of all ages. Watch jugglers, acrobats, knife throwers, and even a live joust on the 9 stages found throughout the grounds.
